Are artifical sweetners bad for you?

I see a lot of patients using zero sugar and zero calorie drinks.

So are they good for you?

Artificial sweeteners, also known as non-nutritive sweeteners, are synthetic compounds that are used to add sweetness to foods and drinks without adding calories. So that sounds ok….

While they are generally considered safe for consumption by regulatory agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is ongoing debate about the potential health risks associated with long-term consumption of artificial sweeteners.

Some studies have suggested that consumption of artificial sweeteners may be linked to increased risk of certain health problems, such as metabolic disorders, weight gain, and even some types of cancer. However, the evidence is not conclusive, and some studies have found no significant health risks associated with artificial sweeteners. Yikes!!

It is important to note that the safety and health effects of artificial sweeteners may vary depending on the type and amount consumed, as well as an individual’s overall health status and dietary habits. Some people may experience negative side effects from consuming artificial sweeteners, such as headaches, gastrointestinal upset, or allergic reactions.

If you are concerned about the potential health risks of artificial sweeteners, it is best to talk to your healthcare provider n9like me) or a registered dietitian. We can help you make an informed decision about whether or not to include artificial sweeteners in your diet, and recommend alternative sweeteners or dietary approaches if necessary.

I recommend limiting artificial anything foods. Stick with the real stuff!
